Nest Update March 7, 2013 - Eggwatch Day 4

Happy Eggwatch, MN Bound Eagle Watchers!

Since my last post the cam went down at about 11:30pm nest time Wednesday night and came back up for the early morning coffee crowd.

Mom looked like she spent at least part of the night in the nest and woke to a winter wonderland.

Mom Starts the Morning from 989Razzle:

They were both on and off the nest all morning and then mom stayed for a while.

About 9am Dad came back and decided a big stick was in the wrong place and wrestling ensued. The stick was lost over the edge and nobody won the match.

Branch Slides Over the Edge:

The cam went down for a while about 10am and returned about 2 pm. We were then treated to the biggest stick I have seen them try to wrestle with this year. BBC panned for us as the action developed. Surprisingly they were very cooperative with this one and took turns placing it. Mom got the final say, of course.

No Branch Too Long:

Late in the afternoon they treated themselves to a meal of mallard drake on the nest. They now have some nice duck wings as decoration on the nest. Some fantastic panning was included as they ate their meal. We were hoping to see a brood patch on Dad as he perched above Mom but it was not to be....

Look For Brood Patch And Prey Offering

Mark and the BBC team have been working diligently on the cam outages and have reported that the power system was the culprit. They report they have fixed the problems and we should see no more cam outages for a while. Thanks BBC!

Well, another busy day on the nest and maybe an Egg tonight??

We’ll see!

Happy Eagle viewing and we’ll see you on the nest!

Nest Update March 6, 2013 - Ups and Downs

Happy Eggwatch, MN Bound Eagle Watchers!

Overnight the cam was up but the IR illuminator was down. There was some speculation that Mom had turned it off for privacy but there was no egg to be seen in the morning. It looked like that Dark and Stormy night that I keep hearing about!

Today was the 1 year anniversary of Harmon’s egg laying! We all hope he is doing well!

Early on today Mom and Dad were busy with nestorations after the big snowfall the nest received. They were working hard at it and and had another stick wrestling match.

We lost the cam feed due to unknown reasons at about noon nest time. The BBC team jumped on the problem and brought the feed back up about 5pm nest time. All Hail BBC!

Our videographer 989Razzle put together a compilation of panning shots that is just spectacular!

Mom returned to the nest at dusk to tease us again. However she did not settle in and left to sleep on a branch for the night. No egg tonight, I guess! And I was so hoping for an egg on my Hatchday!

Well, we are still on EggWatch and I will be back tomorrow with another update.

Happy Eagle viewing and we’ll see you on the nest!

Monday March 4, 2013 Evening Update - Doin's On The Nest

Well, today at the MN Bound Eagle nest has been a busy one.

Mom and Dad Eagle have been hard at work getting the nest ready for the eggs to come. They were in and out several times bringing sticks, grasses and leaves in. The usual comedy ensued over stick placement. Mom and Dad were tied in that department today. This evening was good in that no intruders stopped by. Probably hiding from the snowstorm!

Mom is spending the night in the nest for the first time this year. Unfortunately she is being snowed on. The nest area is supposed to get six to eight inches of snow tonite and tomorrow. She looks like she will “weather the storm” just fine.

All the chatters and all the mods are wondering if this is the night she will lay the first egg of the year.

We will all just have to wait and see!

Mark and the Broadband team revamped the power to the cam Monday. They took the old solar array completely offline and put all the systems on the new solar array. Mark said it was looking good and was charging well even with cloudy skies. The new arrangement is better for power but did take away some switching and monitoring capabilities. This means the cam will be up 24/7 from now on! BBC is closely watching all the systems to make sure everything is running right.

Thanks to Mark and the BBC Team for all the hard work to get the cam up and running so we can experience this Eagle nest up close and personal!

Well, it looks to be an exciting week at the nest and we are looking forward to having some eggs to stare at.

Happy Eagle viewing and we’ll see you on the nest!
