Nest Update May 13, 2013 - Eaglessoarfree's Guest Blog

Hi fellow eagle lovers!

When Talon first came up with the idea of all the mods doing a guest blog I have to admit I was a little nervous since I am a new mod and don’t have as much knowledge about eagles as my fellow mods do. When I read all the blogs that came before mine and saw how amazing they all were I went from being nervous to terrified! I hope my entry lives up to the high standards they have set.

I have always loved nature and animals. Even as a little girl I remember going for walks with my family in a nearby nature preserve and marveling at the sights, sounds, and smells of nature. The wonder I felt when I saw a deer standing a ways away in the forest at dusk and watching, in the blink of an eye, as it bounded away. How soothing it felt to close my eyes and listen to the birds sing and the leaves rustle. How fun it was to feel the leaves crunch under my feet as I walked along the trails. Each season was beautiful in its own way…from the flowers blooming in spring, to the trees changing color in the fall, to the snow that blanketed the earth in the winter, and finally the beautiful lush greens of summer.

When I became a teacher I wanted to pass along the love and respect of nature that my family taught me to my students. Since I have mostly taught grades K-2 there is always an animal unit for science. Until I discovered the amazing world of eagle cams, this was taught using different non fiction books, beanie babies, real objects like rocks and leaves and field trips to the local nature preserve.

When I decided to leave 1st grade and start teaching special education 5 years ago, I thought my days of teaching how to respect and love nature and animals was over since I wouldn’t be teaching science units anymore. I could not have been more wrong.

Last year, I worked with a high functioning autistic boy who had meltdowns when he got frustrated. He would come down to my room to calm down. I had a variety of things in my room to help all my students when they needed to calm down such as a small trampoline they could jump on, stability balls they could sit or lay on, and MP3 players with relaxing nature music that they could listen to. He loved the MP3 players the best!

One day this student had a meltdown while I was in my room eating lunch and watching this eagle cam. It was just after Harmon had been returned to the nest. When he had calmed down, he looked at my computer, pointed at it, and asked, “What’s that?” I looked over and saw that in the time it took to get him calmed down, I had forgotten to shut off the cam. I explained to him that it was an eagle and told him about Harmon’s story. Immediately he was hooked! I read him books about eagles and we watched the cam as well as videos of eagles soaring in the sky and catching fish. He would point at the screen and tug on my shirt whenever Harmon acted up! I got extra hard tugs when Harmon wingersized! We made a plan so he could come in at the same time every day or when he felt himself getting frustrated  so he could check on Harmon and watch eagle videos.

One day he had just gotten done watching a video of an eagle flying and was watching Harmon and he said to me, “Eagles teach me.” I smiled at him and asked him what the eagles had taught him. His response? “To be calm.”

At that moment I realized that he had taught me much more than I had taught him. He had taught me a very valuable lesson that I think as adults we tend to forget in the craziness of life. Eagles are calming. Whenever I am stressed out, frustrated, or upset, all I have to do to calm down is watch the eagles.

I think about that student whenever I see an eagle soaring in the sky or when I am watching the cam and I try to remember his words. When I am stressed out, I try to stop what I’m doing, take a deep breath, and either watch the eagles or picture them in my mind soaring high in the sky. I hope that he is able to watch the nest this year and see our new angels, Peace and Harmony, grow into amazing eagles. I hope he is aware of their names and how they relate to the word calm. Because of these magnificent, majestic birds a whole new, calm world was opened up to a little boy who was smart enough to realize eagles for what they truly are – a wonderous, miraculous gift that truly have the power to calm and soothe.

Nest Update May 12, 2013 - Mom’s Day On The Nest And Other Stories

Good Evening, Fellow MomLoversEverywhere!!

Update: Monday’s Blog will be by a Guest Blogger. It’s a marvelous story, please don’t miss it!

Spring in Minnesota was never finer than this Mothers Day! The dawn came up like thunder and revealed a simply marvelous day on the nest. Dad brought Mom and the kids breakfast in the nest (it was a duck of unknown species) and they chowed down while the cam rested for a short while. When the cam reawakened the duck was mostly gone and kids and parents looked greatly satisfied. Food comas ensued and Mom had a very pleasant morning watching the scenery change as the world greens up around her. The afternoon was calm and relaxed also as Dad and Mom traded places watching the kids and patrolling the area. Dad brought another bird late afternoon for a dinner treat. As the darkness fell he also brought in what looked like a wing from a large bird that had the markings of either a wild turkey or a barn owl. The light was so poor by that time it was tough to make a positive ID. Hopefully, we will be able to tell in the morning.

The Tremendous Twosome, Harmony and Peace, spent the day doing eaglet things. They napped, grew feathers, ate, played a couple of rounds of Scare The Chatters and had a very pleasant day chasing Mom and Dad around the nest. Peace awoke bleary eyed this morning and proceeded to PS right on Harmony’s head. Later in the day Peace had a tug-o-war with Dad over a stick and won. I guess OSD (Obsessive Stick Disorder) is hereditary. During one of the rounds of the game they went for a slam dunk as they both hung their heads over the rails at the same time. They made the play and were very happy with themselves. The chatters were amazed at the amount of coordination they showed during that play. Lots of screenshots were taken and posted to the web. I am trying to decide whose gets posted here tonight.

The new neighbors downstairs in the nest were very noisy today as they set up housekeeping and prepared for new families of their own. Chatters were amazed that the eagles allowed them to move in. Many species of animals have a symbiotic relationship that lets them live in close proximity to one another. This is just one example of it. The lower part of the nest is a perfect place for smaller species of birds to live and raise young. At least 3 species have been seen going in and out of the lower nest area. As they are not a ready prey species for the eagles they are really in no danger from the eagles. And the benefit to them is the eagles keep away predators that would plunder their nests if they were located elsewhere. The only drawback for us is that the noisy sparrows seem to have taken up residence right next to the microphone. Makes for an earful sometimes.

Some great vids and pics from today.

Nest Update May 11, 2013 - Saturday In The Dark

Good Evening, Fellow PinFeatherItchers!!

My apologies to the supergroup Chicago for the title.

A special thanks to Patrice Weaver and Georgia Public Broadcasting for this note they sent along.

I work for Georgia Public Broadcasting and we have a local weekly show called Georgia Outdoors. Here is the link to a 1/2 hour show we did on raptors. I think the folks who write the blog about the eagle nest might find in interesting. By the way, I have become addicted to the live camera and the blog. Keep up the great work!

Please take some time and watch the Raptors In Flight program. It is very well done with lots of good slo-mo footage of the birds on the wing. Thanks, Patrice and we hope you keep enjoying the blog and nest.

Saturday on the nest was a lovely afternoon for the chatters as the cam was down until just after noon. BBC is working diligently to resolve the power problems that have bugged the cam for the past week or so. We lost the cam late afternoon just as Mom had brought home a giant carp for the kids to gnaw on. After it came back up Dad was seen trying to polish off the last of the carp. Its amazing that Harmony and Peace could put away that much of that big fish in so little time. I’ll bet they had some help from Mom. The rest of the day was filled with the usual things eaglets do. They slept, ate nestovers, slept, PSed and slept some more. Dad chased away some of the tenants of the downstairs apartments when they bugged him as he was standing on the edge of the nest. He ended up on a branch across from the nest as the wind carried him away from the edge. Mom had a good day just hanging with the kids until she went fishing and showed Dad again how it’s done. The look on his face was priceless as she brought the fish home. The wind died down as the sun set and we had another lovely evening on the nest.

On to the vids!

Love this! These are the talons of an 8 WEEK old bald eagle on Catalina Island in California. This gives some perspective on our kids clown feet. Some have trouble when I tell them that the clown feet are almost as big as their hands. Hope this helps them visualize that.

Well, it was another fishy, windy, and sunny day at the MN Bound nest! I love spending time watching our eaglets grow. I hope you all do too!

Thanks to Razzle, Bekka and BBC for our lovely pics and vids today. And a special shout-out to IWS for the talons pic.

Happy Mothers Day to all mothers great and small. Hope your day will be special.

See you on the nest tomorrow!

Nest Update May 10, 2013 - Green Leaves and Blue Skies!

Good Evening, Fellow FineSpringDayLovers!!

The day at the nest dawned bright and clear and the cam was up to see it. Some panning midmorning showed us the greening of the area and smoke from a fire south of the nest. The fire posed no danger to the nest but was interesting to see from the cam.

Later in the day another shot in the same direction showed the fire was out. Hope it was a rubbish fire and nothing was hurt.

Mom, Dad, and the kids had a marvelous day on the nest. Dad went fishing again and brought in 2 more good sized fish, a bass(we believe) and a good sized carp. These went to restocking crops and keeping Harmony and Peace full and satisfied. Mom brought in some more grasses to help keep the nest neat and tidy and the kids tried to help her spread them around. H&P played a couple of rounds of Scare The Chatters without much success as the peeps in chat are now wise to their ways. Rail painting and tree trunk whitewashing continued apace and looks to be completed before they fledge. As Dad brought home the bass today it seemed like he was followed to the nest by an intruder. Both he and Mom went into alert mode and warned whoever it was away. They waited until the area was clear to begin feeding H&P. The rest of the day was just a nice lazy spring day as the leaves popped out and the kids grew some more. At the rate they are growing we may see them off sooner than expected. Not that that would make us happy but it is wonderful to see them developing so fast. Mom and Dad each spent time with the kids today and even caught a few naps themselves. Another lovely pink sunset closed out the day.

On to the vids of the day!

BBC gave us some nice closeups of Harmony and Peace catching rays and making Vitamin D.

But Mom, I don’t wanna go to school!

A hearty Thanks as always to Razzle, Bekka and BBC for the wonderful pics and vids!

Hope you had a great day on the nest and we’ll see you there tomorrow.

Nest Update May 9, 2013 - Clown Feet and Lots To Eat!

Good Evening, Fellow NestCircusFans!!

Boy, I am going to have to up my game here. The guest bloggers have been superb and have set a new standard for me to meet. I hope the ones coming up don’t push me as hard as the first three have. Not sure I can keep up!

Yesterday and today at the nest have been shortened viewing days for us as BBC works to restore the cam to full power. They have taken the cam down at night to conserve power and brought it back up about midday to give the panels time to recharge the batts. They have been very busy with the cam here and also getting the Loon cam going for the season. Hope they are getting a little rest!

Mom, Dad and the kids have had a windy and cloudy few days at the nest. Harmony and Peace have been giving the chatters a break from the game they were playing and are keeping to the safer parts of the nest. Dad has been the great white headed fisherman and brought home at least three very good sized fish and a few other animals to make very good meals for H&P. Mom has been making sure crops are topped up at all times. There hasn’t been much excitement but Mom and Dad have let loose with a few warning calls to passersby. Harmony and Peace are learning to nibble on the food that is brought in and also how to use those clown feet of theirs. They have been very playful with each other and are starting to compete for bites from Mom and Dad. Also their tree trunk and rail painting is coming along very well. Harmony has been seen helping Mom adjust the Feng Shui of the nest and Peace has been catching up on her beauty sleep. They both have feathers starting to sprout and Harmony is getting that speckled look that tells us her body and flight feathers are coming in. Last nights sunset and tonights also were a lovely shade of pink which delighted our mod Pinkabbie.

Great vids from yesterday and today.

As you can see it was a calm two days at the nest. The kids are growing by leaps and bounds and its fun to see the changes happening before our eyes. Thanks as always to Razzle, JReagle and BBC for the marvelous vids and pics.

Hope you had a great day on the nest and we’ll see you there tomorrow!
