Nest Update June 12, 2013 - Thunder In The Morning

Good Evening, Fellow BoltDodgers!!

The nest day started dark and loud today. It was thought by some of the chatters that breakfish was a snake today but the vids were reviewed and a snake on the nest cannot be confirmed due to poor visibility. From dawn to about 10am it actually looked like it was getting darker because of the thunderstorms moving over the area. It was kind of cool to see the nest lit up by the occasional lightning bolt though. Mom and the kids stood in the nest and just waited for the storms to pass. We have a dark blog exclusive video below of the storm on the nest today. It lightened up considerably after the storms passed and Peace and Harmony set about the task of drying off and eating everything delivered to the nest. At one point in the afternoon it seemed like Mom and Dad were delivering a small snack every half hour. At the last snack delivery the kids were laid out for a nap and reacted very slowly to the fact that there was more food available. Peace finally scored the grab and mantle and had her way with the food first. Harmony stole it after a bit and ran around the nest with it to celebrate. Dinner was a large tasty fishy (still flapping) and Mom served them both with a hearty meal. As the shadows grew longer it was a very pleasant evening on the nest and darkness fell on two contented eaglets.

Onto the vids and pics of the day.

Peace scores first with a snack but Harmony gets the steal.

Nest Update June 11, 2013 - Twirling On A Tuesday

Good Evening, Fellow StalkTwirlers!!

Tuesday on the nest began with another aquatic avian for breakfish which was a change from all the tasty fishies they had been having. Peace and Harmony were well fed and Harmony scored an orange drumstick that she swallowed whole, webbed foot and all. It was a gnatty day on the nest again. In between swatting and biting at the gnats the morning was spent doing normal eaglet things and plotting the best strategies for attacking a parent when they bring food to the nest. Peace took up her baton practice again and spent a lot of time twirling the cornstalk while Harmony napped and tried to keep out of her way. That kid is going to be a drum majorette when she grows up. About 1pm Dad shows up with what turns out to be a rabbits head and a scrum ensues for possession. Peace wins the scrum but can’t seem to get the rest of the plan in motion. Harmony scores the head from Peace and figures out that its for eating. They play rugby on the nest with it, back and forth, until Mom shows up with something else furry and Peace grabs that too. Mom fed the rabbits head to Harmony and then fed what Peace had to the both of them. About 5pm Dad shows up with a turtle snack and the kids now have a new hockey puck to play with. About 7:30pm Mom shows up with half of a big tasty fishy and the kids get a proper dinner. As darkness fell all was serene on the nest even with the gnats still there.

On to the vids and pics of the day.

Peace executes a perfect mantle and the rugby game is on.

Well, I hope you practiced your twirling for a Tuesday today. The kids are growing up fast and will be branching in the next couple of weeks. We are estimating last week of June for branching with fledging a week or so later after which Harmony and Peace will go to graduate school with Mom and Dad training them to survive on their own. Interesting times ahead for all of us.

Have a pleasant evening and we’ll see you on the nest tomorrow!

Nest Update June 10, 2013 - A Late Monday Blog!

Good Evening, Fellow LateNesters!!

This blog is very late and I do apologize! I was on a production today that ran waayy long and I had no access to the nest or chat all day. I have been trying to catch up on the happenings today so forgive me if I miss something!

The day dawned beautiful and eaglets were left wondering where breakfish was. The morning passed pretty much without incident until around midday several voices were heard close to the nest. As well as I can piece together they were very rude and very loud. As being within 100 yards of an eagles nest when young are present is a federal offense we were actually listening to federal criminals and they are probably guilty of trespass as well as the nest is on private property. The authorities have been notified and are looking into the situation. If any of you living near the nest (you know who you are!) have any information about who was near the nest today, please let the local authorities know! Thanks! About midafternoon Peace was soaking up some rays at the far side of the nest and Harmony was battling gnats. The gnats were bothering Peace too so she started wingwhapping to try to drive them away. It seemed to help for a bit. A little bit later Mom landed with no food and got her feet bit by the kids as a reward. She stood there for a few minutes, then she left and the kids watched her go. Harmony decided the current food situation wasn’t to her liking and she threw the first hissy fit of the season. It was a beaut and worthy of inclusion in the Harmon Hissy Fit Hall of Fame. All the while Peace just sat in the middle of the nest with a “Who, Me??” kind of demeanor. When Dad did finally bring a furry snack to the nest the kids were so busy jousting over it Mom dropped down and claimed it from them. They both behaved as she fed them. Early evening the kids were engaged in some cornstalk wrestling when Harmony spotted something nearby that rated a call we have not heard from her before. She actually sounded a little bit like a duck! This type of call has been heard from eaglets at other nests and Harmon last year and may be a first attempt at a peal call with a young throat.

On to the pics and vids of the day.

Nest Update June 9, 2013 - A Century Of Blogs

Good Evening, Fellow EagleObservers!!

Today marks the 100th blog of the season. There is lots to talk about today in this centurion of blogs and a blog exclusive vid so let’s get to it.

A little off nest news first. The Alcoa eaglets, Honor and Glory, both fledged today. The moments were captured by an avid eaglewatcher, Gloria Keeslar, who graciously allowed us to share some of her pictures here.

5401_10201273521621095_1023952242_n.jpg

Thank you, Gloria, and congratulations to Honor and Glory on a perfect fledge.

Our kids, Harmony and Peace, had a food filled day after the sparsity of chow the last few days. Breakfish was a waterfowl of some kind (can’t confirm another gosling) and they came away from that with full crops. It was rainy early here on a cloudy Sunday morning but the weather improved and we even got some sun in the afternoon. The kids spent the morning drying out, napping and getting some exercise. We lost the cam for a bit around noontime on the nest and when it came back up BBC treated us to a pan of the area and a few minutes as a goose cam. Mom and Dad goose look like they are still brooding a nest on the island in the pond so we will probably see more goslings for lunch and dinner.About midafternoon Mom delivered the 2nd meal of the day. It looked furry and plump and Peace tried to grab it all for herself. Peace and Mom had a brief tug-o-war (guess who won) and Mom proceeded to stuff both eaglets again. After the meal P&H romped around for a bit and then settled in for a Sunday nap by the tree trunk. Mom brought a tasty fishy early evening and the crops were filled again with Mom getting the tail for herself. I didn’t see Dad on the nest all day. Hopefully, Stick Depot has some sticks left. As darkness fell all were content on the nest and dreamland awaited our satiated kids.

On to the pics and a blog exclusive vid!

Well, a lot went on today for a lazy Sunday. I see I didn’t even mention the small Rumblefish 2 that Peace instigated today. They battled for a few seconds and Harmony was the victor again. And all the wingwhapping, toy stealing and general fun the kids had. I guess it wasn’t such a lazy Sunday after all.

A pan of the cam to Razzle and BBC for the great work as always today! Thanks!

Hope you all had a lovely Sunday and we’ll see you here tomorrow!

Nest Update June 8, 2013 - Yo, Mom, Where’s The Food?

Good Evening, Fellow PeckishNesters!!

Things heard in the SS today were a little strange. “ Peace is starving and won’t live to fledge” “I hear there’s no more food at this nest” “Harmony’s stealing all of Peace’s food” “The parents have quit feeding Peace”. Where do people hear these things? It seems like the internet has turned into the worlds worst game of Telephone. If you have been following along the last week or so you will have noticed that the food deliveries have been dwindling. This is not because of any food shortage in the nest area. It is a standard progression in eaglet development where the parents cut down on the food supply to make their offspring more aggressive when food is available to them. This nest is fortunate to have ample supplies of food available nearby. We have seen the eaglets stuffed to the gills since hatching and it is hard to see them now being denied food. But, it is a natural progression in the growth cycle of eaglets. They must develop this instinct in order to survive on their own after fledge. If they do not develop it they will starve waiting for someone to feed them. So, please do not be alarmed when the food deliveries are not as they were before. The eaglets can go 24-36 hours without eating after having a full crop. Adults can go days without eating after a full crop so this is good training for our kids.

So, what happened on the nest today you ask?? The cam was down as the sun came up and we did not see any thing until about midmorning. When the cam came up both Peace and Harmony had full crops so breakfish must have been good.  Late morning they started practicing tearing things apart on the nest. This gives them the skills to de-fur and de-feather prey after they fledge. In between this practice they also managed some wingersizing, napping and a little guard duty. Early afternoon Dad brought in a fishtail and dropped it on the nest. Peace grabbed it and tried to nosh on it a bit. Harmony stole it from her and took control. Peace went for the stealback twice but Harmony retained possession and finally polished it off with one big gulp. Around teatime Peace decided to try some wingerhopping after lightening the load. She ended hopping all over Harmony. H got up and returned the favor with a few choice wingwhaps of her own. Early evening Mom teased the kids by landing on the nest with grass clumps and no food. As darkness fell eaglets and chatters were waiting for THE food delivery but alas none came. Mom and Dad are really taking this hunger thing to the max.

On to the pics and vids of the day.
