Nest Update May 18, 2013 -Terrapin Frisbees and Hasenpfeffer Jerky!

Good Evening, Fellow ThunderBoomers!!

What a Saturday! Thunder, lightning, turtles, rain, and resurrected rabbit legs. And a robin, some mystery meat and a tasty fishy or two thrown in. The thunder started about 3am nest time and continued to mid-morning. Mom and the kids got a good soaking and looked pretty miserable until the rain stopped. Harmony and Peace spent the rest of the morning preening and waiting for a meal. It was not to be, however. Mom and Dad decided today was the day to try some exotic foods. First was a turtle. They tried to feed it to the kids but gave up very quickly. It was moved across the nest to a spot near the tree trunk. Peace used it for a pillow for a bit and then left it alone. After about 10 minutes it was clear the turtle had survived the first attempt. His little head and one leg came out and he tried to move across the nest. Unfortunately, all he managed was to move in a circle.

Dad returned soon after and the turtle resumed fulfilling his purpose on the nest. The eaglets had a turtle snack and lay down for a nap. Dad went digging in the nest and after a short while resurrected the rabbit legs that had lain buried for at least 2 weeks. The kids played with the legs and a pair of no longer used wings and Dad managed to find some rabbit jerky still attached to its native platform. After the jerky he hunted up another turtle and Harmony and Peace had another snack-like meal. All the while in the Social Stream the chatters were going crazy with puns, jokes and good names for TV shows about the goings on in the nest. One chatter said he saw Hoffa’s ring as Dad was excavating the nest. Some were hoping Dad might find Elvis buried in the nest. It was a great and funny day to be reading the chat and I hope you didn’t miss it!

Some were concerned that the eaglets weren’t getting enough to eat today.   This is a normal progression as the eaglets reach the next stage of their development. Mom and Dad will reduce the size of the meals to force the kids to compete for food. Their growth is slowing and they can go longer between major feedings. An eaglet with a full crop can go 24-36 hours without being fed again. They just don’t like to go that long!

Mom delivered a BIG tasty fishy as the sun set and Harmony and Peace had full crops at last. Another fish was brought in a half hour later and the kids were topped up for the night. As they tried to settle in Mom decided to rearrange the furniture again. Harmony learned to stay out of her way as Mom dropped the sod clump on her head several times. Things finally settled down and darkness fell on this wonderful day at the nest.

I hate to see this day end but I know we will have many more to come. All the mods and chatters had a blast and the eagles had a lovely day after the rain stopped. Thanks as always to Razzle and BBC for the marvelous pics and vids. And to the mods who stopped laughing long enough to actually mod today!

Hope you had a fun day on the nest and we’ll see you there tomorrow!

Nest Update May 17, 2013 - A Fab Friday!

Good Evening, Fellow TGIFer’s!!

Well the end of the week brought a little rain to our eagle family. Harmony and Peace got their first real shower but it didn’t last long. They hunkered down and waited it out with Mom standing beside them looking like a soaked eagle statue. After the short spritzing the kids resumed exploring the nest, helping rearrange the furniture and generally having a good eaglet day. They were also looking for a meal to be served but it seems Mom and Dad have started stretching out the mess calls. This is a normal development and promotes competition between the eaglets for food. They were still very polite while waiting to be fed but they are getting grabby when Mom offers up the bites of food. A three course meal of fish, roadkill and small bird (some thought duckling) was brought in as the sun set and crops were filled for the night. Mom decided to do some digging in the nest after dinner and proceeded to bury Peace under dusty nest contents. Peace took it with good grace and shimmied her way out of it. As the light slowly faded on the nest Mom and the kids settled in for a nice spring nap.

Todays lovely pics and vids from 989Razzle.

So it was a slightly damp Friday with the prospect of more rain in the next few days. We’ll just have to wait and see if that happens and how H&P handle it. Should be a good time on the nest.

Hope you had a great day watching and we’ll see you tomorrow on the nest.

Nest Update May 16, 2013 - A Pannerific Day

Good Evening, Fellow ScreenCappers!!

If you weren’t able to be with us on the nest today you missed a great opportunity to get some great pics. It seemed that whenever Harmony, Peace, Mom, or Dad moved the cam gnomes (Thanks, BBC!) were there to follow the action. Great closeups, wide vistas and long zooms to geese on Goose Island in the pond. Goslings swimming, leaves budding on the trees and we even spotted the new solar panels!

Mom, Dad, Harmony and Peace had a nice quiet day on the nest. Fish were caught and consumed and feathers continued to be grown. A great family portrait was taken when Mom and Dad were both on the nest to warn away an intruder flying high over the nest. The kids were left alone a little more today and this will only increase as the weeks go by. Harmony tried to take her first self-feed bite today. Peace, not to be outdone by big sister, tried a quick little perch on a rail stick and succeeded if only for a few seconds. They both played and slept in the sun on the nest and tried for shade under Mom and Dad. As the night settled in they were treated to a fishcicle bedtime treat and went to sleep happy and contented. Well, enough with the verbiage and on to the vids and pics.

Hope you had a pannerific day on the nest and we’ll see you there tomorrow.

Nest Update May 15, 2013 - The Cool After The Inferno

Good Evening, Fellow SunBaskers!!

Well, 75 blogs down and maybe 100 or so to go. Hope you have enjoyed reading them as much as I have writing them. Thanks for your support!

Wednesday on the nest must have seemed almost cold at 73˚ after the wind driven blowtorch that was yesterday. Mom, Dad, and the kids spent a peaceful calm day cooling off and relaxing. There were several fresh fish deliveries that were consumed in short order and lots of time was spent growing feathers and scoping out the territory from the rails. Today Harmony turned 30 days old and chatters and mods all wished her well. Each of the kids took turns scoping out the nest and napping the day away. They even managed to both fit under Mom for probably the last time. Dad brought home some fresh grasses for the nest and Mom dug around to aerate the bowl. Another lovely sunset closed out another marvelous day at the MN Bound nest.

Our intrepid videographer 989Razzle took a much deserved semi day off and left us with only one vid today.

The kids were very polite and Mom tweaked Harmony’s beak for her.

Thus ends a superbly calm and wondrously cooler day at the nest. Thanks go out to BBC, Razzle, and our mods jreagle and Bekka1017 for the pics and video today.

Hope you had a great day watching with us and we’ll see you in the cottonwood tomorrow.

Nest Update May 14, 2013 - A Record Day For Heat In MN

Good Evening, Fellow WindyHeatSurvivors!!

Well, that was a great blog entry by eaglessoarfree, wasn’t it? A great story and a great ending! Thanks, Eagles!

Both Monday and today on the nest were very windy. Difference was today was like a blowtorch! The temps all across Minnesota west of the St.Croix River soared into the nineties and beyond. Albert Lea, about 140 miles from the nest reached 102˚ by mid-afternoon. The temps at the nest were almost as hot, reaching 98˚ by 2pm. About 4pm power was lost at one of the relay stations that bring us the cam. Emergency measures were taken and the cam came back up in time for us to watch a beautiful sunset. Thanks BBC!

Monday was a blustery, cloudy day on the nest. It threatened rain early but it all missed the nest. Mom and Dad kept the kids topped up with fish and nestovers. Harmony and Peace were good little eaglets and ate all that was set before them. They also took their naps and performed all their other duties. Tuesday was a bit of a different story. It started warm and became hot in short order. The cam was down early for a bit so breakfish was off-cam today. As it warmed up both Mom and the kids moved to the edges of the nest to take advantage of the stiff wind to cool off a bit. Dad delivered a fish late morning but no one really seemed interested in eating in the heat. Mom and H&P settled in to wait out the heat in the early afternoon. We lost the cam feed late afternoon and when it came back up things had cooled off and the fish was gone. Harmony had a huge crop and Peace looked comfortably full, too. The sun set on the record breaking day at the nest and we look forward to a cooler day tomorrow.

On to the vids!
