Nest Update July 15, 2013 - Peace Smartens Up

Good Evening, Fellow NestGenii!!

An interesting Monday on the nest. It started with Dad delivering a small aquatic avian for breakfish. Peace scored it and started to eat. She heard Harmony coming to the nest and instead of just trying to mantle and eat, Peace actually did the smart thing. She grabbed the prey in her talons and FLEW AWAY! Way to go Peace! Kinda makes one wonder if all that food lost over the side was just a ploy?? She certainly played it right today. Harmony just stood there with a look of wonderment on her beak and played around in the nest for a bit before laying down for some rest. Early afternoon saw a large fish delivered by Mom. Dad came and made an attempt to share the fish but Mom rebuffed him and he made a hasty exit. Mom noshed for a bit waiting for the screamers to show up. Harmony finally does after yelling from the branch across the way and Mom lets her have what's left of the fish. Peace shows up to watch Harmony eat and scores the leftovers. They both left the nest with full crops. The rest of the day was flying lessons, squeeing sessions and short naps in the branches. As darkness fell they were flying pass-bys and cavorting about the tree.

On to the pics and vids of the day!

Nest Update July 14, 2013 - Sunday In The Nest.....

Good Evening, Fellow NestPointillists!!

....With Harmony and Peace. The day was much like the day in the painting in that lots seemed to be happening but not much really was. Mom brought an appetizer for breakfish ( a small bird, we think) and it’s thought that Slick Talons Peace may have lost it over the side again. So Mom went shopping again and came back about 0930 with a relative of the nest intruder of a few weeks ago. Harmony took delivery this time and proceeded to de-fur and nosh on the raccoon. Peace arrived soon after it was delivered and tried for a steal that was rebuffed by Harmony. Peace gave it a few more attempts but they were not aggressive until they had a tug-o-war. Harmony won that one but soon after there was a bigger tug-o-war that Harmony won also. Peace finally made a steal and nibbled down what was left. The pelt lay in the nest for a half hour until Mom returned with a tasty fishy. Peace scored that and Mom consumed the leftover raccoon pelt. Harmony stole the fish (Surprise!) and Peace watched and waited until she was finished with it. Peace had fish brain salad for lunch and then it looked like she lost the skull overboard again. Should’ve named her Fumble Talons McGee. The good thing is they both had full crops after a morning of food deliveries by Mom. The kids played in the tree near the nest for a bit and then flew off to parts unknown for the rest of the day. As darkness fell a loud boom was heard and we could hear them return to the near vicinity of the nest. Things settled down after dark and all was quiet on the nest.

On to the pics and vids of the day!

Nest Update July 13, 2013 - A Serene Saturday

Good Evening, Fellow NestMeditators!!

Saturday was calm and relaxed on the nest. The cam came back up about 1130 to a view of Harmony and Peace still slug-a-bed after staying up all night to watch the free lightning show that started after 1am. Harmony decided to get up a little while later to remind Mom and Dad that there were two hungry eagle offspring in the nest that needed a delivery. Alas the effort was in vain as no parent showed up with food. Peace stayed prone in the nest for quite a while, so long in fact that some chatters and some mods began to wonder if she was ailing. She was just being lazy it turns out and she eventually got up and found some well aged wing bones to gnaw on in place of a proper meal. After Peace finished with them Harmony came down and gave them a go, too. They both wandered around the tree and flew to nearby branches and trees in an effort to get to a spot where Mom and Dad could hear them better. They were heard squeeing from various distances all afternoon and into the evening. Around 20 minutes before sunset Peace returned to the nest with a new set of bones to chew on. Harmony landed a minute later and did her patented steal and got the bones for a late evening snack. After she quickly tired of those they were lost over the side and the kids did their pre-bedtime ramble about the tree. The wind picked up as the darkness fell and another lovely eagle day was done at the MN Bound nest.

Nest Update July 12, 2013 - Tumbles And Fumbles!

Good Evening, Fellow NestGymnasts!!

Twas quite the windy day at the nest. It started out fairly nice with the kids taking flying lessons again and cavorting about the nest. The wind picked up later and they looked liked they were struggling to stay on the nest. Once during the windiness Harmony was parked laying down tail to the wind and was tumbled around by a big gust. She was rather startled by this and decided to blame her sibling which led to a shoving match and Peace nearly being pushed off the nest. Peace retreated to another branch for a bit and let Harmony have the nest to herself. She came back down after a bit and they were buddies again lying together on the nest. They stayed that way until Dad showed up with a partial fish that Peace scored. Dad left quickly and Harmony watched Peace with the fish out of cam range. The cam went down and when it came back up Peace was in view and Harmony could be heard off cam. Some think the food was lost overboard but I contend Harmony stole it from Peace on the branch and finished it off. So Peace did get some food today. Harmony returned to the nest from below the cam and looked very satisfied. Peace went up the trunk and squeed for another delivery. She flew off eventually and was absent when Harmony took delivery of the next fish. H polished that one off too and when Peace returned there was nothing left but a bare spine to pick at. Peace tried swallowing the spine and looked very amusing with it hanging out of her beak. She coughed it back up and added it to the collection on the nest. The rest of the day and evening was given over to finding perches out of the wind or taking advantage of it and hovering and hopping around the tree and nest. Darkness fell on a windy but quiet nest.

Nest Update July 11, 2013 - Kicking, Biting, And Stealing Oh My!

Good Evening, Fellow NestReferees!!

The day started early with Harmony and Peace taking dawn flights (the best time to fly) and kicking around the nest playing with various items. As the morning progressed they would fly to various spots or hide out of camera view and squee for the pizza truck to drive faster. Around midafternoon a parent dropped off a day old fish that Peace grabbed and mantled after jumping down off the trunk. Harmony landed (a very nice landing) a few moments later and began stalking the fish. Peace tried to protect it but Harmony’s stealing skills were more than a match for her. They tussled and wrestled and Harmony finally gave Peace a nip to the head that scored her the prize. Harmony proceeded to nosh on the fish with a wary eye on Peace. Peace tried a couple of weak attempts at a stealback but Harmony rebuffed those easily. Finally Harmony’s appetite was sated and she let Peace steal the last two inches of the fish. Peace scarfed that down with a good tail swallow and went back up the tree to squee for more food. About 6pm a Parent (they come and go so fast now it’s tough to identify them) dropped off a fish and Peace made a clean grab. She got to eat it in peace (sorry) as Harmony’s crop was full and she wasn’t interested in contesting for it. Harmony went for a flying lesson and Peace filled her crop to the brim. The nest was fairly quiet as evening deepened and we saw the kids find their parking spots for the night.

She's not quite as good as Harmon but she's close!!

We saw some interesting behavior on the nest today. The kids are growing up and becoming much more self-centered when it comes to food. The two cute little eaglets that we watched behave so nicely a couple of months ago are gone. They have been replaced by two juvie eagles that are learning to survive in the wild. It is the natural progression and it’s good to see they are taking the lessons to heart. Now, if only the cam wasn’t crippled and we could follow them as they fly! Oh well, there’s always next year!

A pan of the cam to Razzle and BBC as always for the great pics and vids today! Thanks!

Time to close this out and we’ll see you on the nest tomorrow!
